County  JAHC Quarter Final

Castlemartyr 0-22 Newcestown 2-16

Castlemartyr and Newcestown will have to meet again after their county quarter final finished all square in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday afternoon. Leading by 2 points with 4 minutes left, Castlemartyr let their lead slip as the West Cork champions scored 2 points from placed balls to force a replay.

Newcestown got off to the perfect start as we conceded a goal inside the first minute but Castlemartyr responded well and 3 points leveled the game after 5 minutes. The rest of the half was a tight affair with both teams swapping points. Newcestown got a boost when we conceded a soft goal on 23 minutes to put them 2 ahead followed by a point to stretch their advantage to 3. Again Castlemartyr didn’t panic and 3 points again leveled the game at half time. Castlemartyr were dealt a blow just before half time when the influential Eddie Clifford was forced off with a hamstring injury having already scored 2 points from play.

Half way through the second half both teams were still deadlocked and with 10 minutes left Castlemartyr found themselves trailing by a point with their championship campaign on the line. However, 3 unanswered points gave Castlemartyr a two point lead as we looked to hold out for the remaining minutes. A Newcestown attack led to a 65 and they took this chance to leave the minimum between the teams, and another close range free from Newcestown on full time meant they will have to do it all again.

Overall, Castlemartyr will feel they have room for improvement in the replay with the concession of soft goals keeping Newcestown in the game. At the back, Ollie Smiddy had an excellent game while Barra O’Tuama chipped in with 2 points from midfield. Barry Lawton gave an exhibition of free taking from all over the field as well as 4 points from play, while Jimmy Smiddy’s introduction as a second half substitute resulted in 2 points the veteran attacker.

The replay date has yet to be fixed, but check www.castlemartyrgaa.com where the fixture will be posted as soon as it is known.
