Match Report:

CASTLEMARTYR ADVANCE TO SEMI OF COUNTY

The Junior hurlers of Castlemartyr are in their second county semi-final in succession following a hard fought two point victory, over a spirited and dogged Newcestown side in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night last the 4th of October. As is often is the case, this replayed game was not as open and entertaining as the drawn affair, but it was just as close, and the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle. Cian Haines proved to be the unlikely Castlemartyr hero when he pounced for his sideís decisive goal with 8 minutes remaining, following a beautiful pass from fellow substitute Colin Bowens. This put the Reds ahead for the first time since the opening minutes, and they were able to hang on for the remainder of the match, and secure a joust with old rivals Cloughduv next weekend.
Castlemartyr started brightly when Barry Lawton opened their account with a pointed free, but were rocked on their heels when Newcestown goaled with almost their first attack minutes later. With their tails up, they bossed the remainder of the half and were well worth their 4 point lead at half time with the score 0-6 to 1-7.

The second half resumed with Jamie Stack introduced to midfield and he immediately made an impact when he delivered a super ball to Brian Lawton. Brian beat 3 men as he advanced towards goal and blasted the sliothar to the net from 20 yards out. This was the start the Reds needed to ignite their challenge, but try as they might they couldnít draw level. Newcestown had a man harshly ordered off on the 40th minute, but even with the extra man Castlemartyr found it hard to make inroads. Two points stubbornly remained the gap, and it looked like that the Newcestown would hang on, until the Colin Bowens hand pass unlocked their defence, and Cian Haines took full advantage with a blistering ground stroke from 14 yards that bulged the net.

Damien McAuliffe received a second yellow to even the body count with five minutes remaining and the Reds had to endure an anxious few moments from here till the end. Indeed Eanna McGovern had to be alert on the final minute when he expertly tipped over a dangerous shot which left just the bare minimum between the sides. It was left to Barry Lawton to have the final say to restore Castlemartyrís 2 point advantage and they were mightily relieved to hear the sound of the full time whistle soon after.
