:Yet another draw for Castlemartyr in the Junior A county hurling championship. With time up, Castlemartyr held a one point lead and looked set to book their place in the county final. However, in the dying seconds Cloughduv were awarded a free inside their own half and took this chance to draw the game.
This game could have gone either way with both teams enjoying periods of dominance at different times. However, Castlemartyr will look back on numerous goal chances which they failed to convert, and had just one of these found the net, we might have done enough to win.
Cloughduv started the brighter and were 4 points to 1 up after 10 minutes. Castlemartyr began to settle into the game as the half wore on, and after 17 minutes we were only a point down on a score of 6 points to 5. Castlemartyr did miss 3 clear goal chances in the opening half with Brian Lawton hitting the crossbar after a great run from midfield. By half time, we found ourselves 2 point down on a score of 11 to 9.
Castlemartyr started the second half with a bang, and scored 6 unanswered points in the first 15 minutes. Seanie Hennessey had two, as did Cian Haines who was having a fine game on his first start at this level. Cloughduv finally woke up and scores 3 points from play to trail by 1 with 10 minutes to go. A Barry Lawton point pushed our lead out to 2 again but then we were rocked by a scrappy Cloughduv goal to put the 1 point up. Another Cloughduv point put them 2 up with 5 minutes left but Castlemartyr didn’t panic and showed great character to reel off 3 points in a row. Cian Haines scored his third from play. Brian Lawton flicked the ball over the bar following a great run through the middle and then set up Brian Smiddy to put us in the lead with time up. With one minutes of added time announced Castlemartyr though they had done enough, but well into the 62nd minute Cloughduv got their chance and took it with a free from inside their own half to level the game.
It was a much improved performance from Castlemartyr than previous games, with the forwards in particular upping their game. Cian Haines had a great full debut with 3 points from play, with Seane Hennessey also raising 3 white flags. Brian Lawton showed his class with 5 points from play while Barry Lawton also contributed well from both play and placed balls. At the back, Adrian Bowens hurled an amount of ball, while Briain O’Tuama had a fine game away from his usual corner back slot.
So with the replay likely to be next weekend, Castlemartyr will have to go to the well again but there is no doubt that we have the ability to get over the line.
