:Castlemartyr U-21 Footballers took to the field in Shanagarry last Wednesday evening (30th March) as underdogs against a fancied St. Colmans outfit.
Castlemartyr had battled to a 2-06 to 0-06 victory over Youghal in the previous round, came up against a St. Colmans side who put 13-14 past Lisgoold in their first round match.
From the off it was a tight affair but St. Colmans showed why they went into the game as favourites as they scored a goal on their first real attack. St. Colmans led for most of the first half and only for Conor Whyte showing a masterclass in goals Castlemartyr would have being out of the game by half time. However the lads composed themselves and goals from Jamie Stack and Mike Kelly along with a handful of points saw Castlemartyr lead at the break 2-04 to 1-02.
They 2nd half was as tight as the first half but St. Colmans stormed out of the blocks and within 10 minutes of the first half they had cut their 5 point deflect to draw the game 2-04 a piece. Both sides traded points but St. Colmans looked to be in the driving seat when they pointed with only 4 minutes left. However, moments later Declan Kelly who had being outstanding all night scored the point that brought the sides level once more. With time almost up Cormac Lynch popped up with a beautiful pointed left foot shot that proved to be the winner. St. Colmans tried in vain to tie the game but a strong showing from the Castlemartyr backs showed them that there was no way through.
Referee Cathal McAllister blew the full time whistle and the Castlemartyr U-21 Footballers were through to their first East Cork final since 2004 on a scoreline of 2-08 to 2-07. They will go into the Final on the 17th April against favorites Fr. O'Neills.
